Since 1849 the destinies of the city of Aurora and the Burlington Railroad have been intertwined. Each helped the other grow. The railroad brought the mail, groceries, industrial supplies and jobs – becoming for many years the largest employer in Aurora. The city in turn grew its industrial base and fueled further growth of the railroad. Known today as BNSF, the history of the Burlington Railroad is a fascinating look back at the central role it played in the growth of Aurora. Leo Phillipp is a former railroad brakeman and conductor. He’s worked all types of train operations in the Aurora area including clearing derailments. He’s directed fleet services for the largest tank car owner and lessor in North America and currently purchases retired railroad cars for parts, recycling and other uses. He’s published numerous articles on railroad history.
