Batavia
The City of Batavia is a scenic and lively community of 25,000 residents located along the Fox River, 35 miles west of Chicago. Batavia boasts great dining, boutique shopping, beautiful parks, the community-built Riverwalk, Depot Museum, two theater companies, and a variety of year-round cultural activities. Founded in 1833, it is the oldest city in Kane County and is known as the "City of Energy" for two reasons: It served as the home to five windmill factories during its early years, and has proudly served as the home of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) since it was established in 1967. Along both sides of the Fox River are bike trails extending as far north as Algonquin and south to Oswego.
