Firefighter Dayna and Tango the Fire Safety Dog

Children will delight in singing along with Firefighter Dayna as they learn about recognizing the sound and importance of smoke alarms as well as making and having an escape map. Children will also learn how often to practice home exit drills and watch as Tango demonstrates crawling low under the smoke.

n early August, a judging panel met to review the 40 applications from artists throughout the Chicagoland area. On Saturday, October 29, the murals will be unveiled to the public. We ask you to join us for this special occasion. The artists have been hard at work, and the results will amaze you. The proposals were reviewed for Artistic Merit, Appropriateness to Public Presentation, and Originality.

Pumpkin Weekends

Fall into a month’s worth of autumnal celebration at Blackberry Farm each weekend in October. Each weekend Blackberry Farm will be festively decorated in the spirit of pumpkin season. A picnic area will feature an assortment of pumpkins for purchase, and a decorating station with painting supplies is provided. Carousel rides, hay rides and tours on the “Pumpkin Train” also are part of each weekend’s festivities. Park hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $4 per person.

Creating Mexican American Identities: Multiple Voices, Shared Dreams)

This exhibit was produced by the West Chicago City Museum, with grants from the Illinois Humanities Council and The History Channel. It traces the development of the Mexican American community in the Chicago area and all material is in English and Spanish. The exhibit also features images from the Aurora Historical Society’s archives -- The Wall of Memories from the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board. The opening reception is Friday, August 12, 2011 from 5:00-7:00pm with music, food and cash bar. Admission to the reception and the exhibit is free. Free parking at the Downer/Stolp Deck (have your ticket stamped in the gift shop).

A Celebration of Souls: Day of the Dead in Southern Mexico

Mexicans prepare for the celebration - which often includes decorating burial plots, lively family reunions, and the preparation of special foods - for weeks in advance, decorating altars in honor of the deceased.
The 26 stunning photographs in A Celebration of Souls: Day of the Dead in Southern Mexico show villagers immersed in all aspects of the celebration. The exhibit will include artifacts from the Schingoethe Collection and an altar created by Aurora University Latino students.
