Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition (ILHC) continues to seek ways to recognize the significance of the nation’s first transcontinental highway and ways to make the stories come alive. These grant dollars will be used to produce forty interpretive murals and a companion brochure over the next 3 years. The murals will be placed in 40 communities that line the 179-mile byway; each interpreting the history and heritage of the highway and its impact on the communities.
“We are excited to begin this new project! This money, plus the $40,000 we just received from the state and the Illinois Bureau of Tourism will make it all happen. Our hope is that visitors will be compelled to travel Illinois Lincoln Highway and discover all that it has to offer”, said Diane Rossiter, Associate Director of the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition. Besides this new project, ILHC is currently working on constructing 20 interpretive gazebos along the highway. They are expected to be completed at the end of 2008.
