On October 24th, 2017, the cities and residents of Plano and Sandwich will make good on the long-standing joke, “What sits between Plano and Sandwich?” The answer, of course, is baloney. And on October 24th, which annually is proclaimed “National Bologna Day”, the two cities will unite together and create the town of “Bologna (Baloney for most Americans), Illinois”, on Route #34! Location moved to Timber Creek Inn & Suites, 3300 Drew Ave., Sandwich.
There will be two co-mayors, of “Bologna, IL” that day; Ed Schleining of Wurst Kitchen in Plano and Karl Rud, retired butcher from Sandwich, who will be given the honorary titles, positions and responsibilities that day. What is to be known as “Plano-Bologna-Sandwich Day”, will take place starting at 3pm and go until 7pm, in between both towns. From 5pm til 7pm, Joliet based band, “The Baloney Brothers” will perform on site for entertainment. VIP’s and various officials are also expected to drop in and visit as well. The inaugural “Plano-Bologna-Sandwich Day” will act as food drive to help stock pantries that serve those in need in Plano and Sandwich. When patrons and attendees bring non-perishable foods to “Bologna”, they will be able to enjoy a plain old (fried) baloney sandwich to celebrate the event, and serve as a thank you for their donation. Mayor Bob Hausler of Plano, and, Mayor Rick Olson of Sandwich, along with several volunteers, are spearheading the effort and are being assisted in this effort by their respective Chambers and businesses in the area.
