Edith Farnsworth’s poems were influenced by the natural world around Farnsworth House and in Maine. In her spare, formal verse, there are echoes of Lorine Niedecker and Marianne Moore, two important Modern poets. This virtual reading and talk will trace some of those echoes and influences and discuss the evolution of “nature poetry” as ideas of social justice and ecology came to infuse and complicate its solace and praise.

This virtual tea party opens with an introduction to the poetry of Edith Farnsworth by Nora Wendl, Edith Farnsworth scholar. Elizabeth Bradfield, author and creative writing instructor at Brandeis University, will then lead a discussion focusing on the poetry of Edith and other modern poets.
