William Tanner House, 1857
The William Tanner House has proudly been the home of the Aurora Historical Society since it was donated by the family in 1936. The house was a gift to the Society from William Tanner’s children, Mary Tanner Hopkins and Martha Tanner Thornton, affectionately referred to as the Tanner twins. It was placed on the national register of historic places in 1976. Built in 1856, this Italianate home is where you’ll find historic photos, books, documents and maps covering Aurora’s history from the 1830s to now. Tours of this fully furnished home and exhibits offered by appointment. Season tours begin in April and are offered every Wed. and Sun. through September. They will be closed on July 3 to prepare for Independence Day. Tours are free; donations are appreciated.
