One of the Fox Valley’s longest-running summer traditions returns Saturday, June 6, as the Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race celebrates its 65th anniversary on the Fox River.
Organized by the Fox Valley Park District, the Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race has welcomed generations of paddlers, families and volunteers since the inaugural race in 1961. The annual event combines competition, recreation and community spirit while showcasing the scenic Fox River corridor through St. Charles, Batavia, North Aurora and Aurora.
“It’s a longstanding community tradition that continues to bring participants, volunteers and families together who are ready to kick off summer,” says Lynn Piotrowski, facility manager at Prisco Community Center and race coordinator. “I can’t imagine any local community-focused traditions that have been going longer than the race.”
The race offers multiple categories in both competitive and recreational divisions, including options for participants who require canoe or kayak rentals.
Participants may choose from two race distances:
- A 10-mile course launching from Mt. St. Mary Park in St. Charles (Prairie Street east of Route 31)
- A 6-mile course beginning at the Batavia VFW, 645 S. River St., Batavia
Race heats begin at 8:30 a.m. in St. Charles and 10 a.m. in Batavia.
All racers receive a commemorative t-shirt, and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division. Participants must register online or at Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora.
Along the course, racers will encounter portages where paddlers must exit the river and carry their canoe or kayak around dams before re-entering the water downstream. St. Charles participants will complete three portages, while Batavia participants will complete one.
Fox Valley Park District Operations staff will assist recreational participants during portages. Competitive racers, however, must complete the course without assistance.
New timing system, finish line
New to this year, all boats will be chip-timed through an electronic timing system designed to improve accuracy and provide quicker race results. Timing chips embedded in participant bibs will automatically record finish times.
The new system also shifts the official finish line to the Illinois Avenue bridge in Aurora, where timing equipment will be suspended above the river.
“In past years, racers would often raise their paddles as they passed under the bridge, even though the actual finish line was still a short distance away,” says Piotrowski. “Now, the bridge truly becomes the finish line. Racers will be able to see it ahead of them, push through that final stretch, and experience a much more exciting finish to the race.”
Participants urged to use shuttles
Race officials strongly encourage participants bringing their own canoes or kayaks to use the shuttle system. Racers should unload boats at their launch locations, drive to and park at Prisco Community Center and board one of two shuttles returning participants to their respective starting areas approximately 90 minutes before their race heat.
Party In the Park
Following the race, participants and spectators are invited to continue the celebration during the annual “Party in the Park” at nearby McCullough Park.
A wristband for lunch is included with race registration. Reuland’s Food Service will prepare a grilled lunch menu with additional food items available for purchase. Non-racers may also purchase a $27 ticket that includes lunch and a race T-shirt. Fans can also purchase just the race T-shirt for $15.
For more than six decades, the Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race has remained a signature summer event that blends recreation, river tradition and community pride.
“It’s a unique event that continues to bring people together year after year,” Piotrowski says. “Whether someone is racing competitively or simply paddling for fun, there’s a great atmosphere surrounding the entire day.”
